Taking A Stance Without Wearing Pants

As I was leaving my ward building Sunday December 9th, I announced to the bishop and others standing near me "remember that next Sunday is black tie Sunday", so don't act shocked when I stroll into church looking like I'm bout to go to the Christmas Ball with Jesus. I wasn't prepared for what was coming my way as a Sista in this church. On 12/12 a Wednesday facebook, twitter, and the social media highway was all a buzz about the up rising of Mormon Women. Everyone wanted to know who was wearing pants to church on Sunday? At first I thought it was a joke, it was not a joke, these Sista's were serious, they were actually gearing up to wear pants to church, on a Sunday. There was a whole facebook page dedicated to it, the news media was actually covering it, NPR reserved a whole 3 minutes to talk about it, WHAT?

Sista Laurel and I have both at separate times in our lives worn pants to church we had no idea it was or could be seen as an act of defiance. We certainly had not worn pants in the past to be defiant. We wore pants because that's what we wanted to wear. When I wore my pants no one treated me in a negative manner. No one politely or impolitely for that matter asked me to leave the church because Mormon women don't wear pants. It was just business as usual, the opening prayer got said, the sacrament got passed, and responsibilities got handled. Some people looked at me strange, because it's not typical to see an LDS sister wearing pants to church but nothing rude was said directly to me, and I have yet to hear any reports that were bad. As I pondered the conversations that I'd participated in on facebook, twitter, and within my social circle. I started to feel somewhat fearful as to whether or not I would be judged by some of the women that I loved and respected if I chose not to wear pants to church on Sunday. In my real life, not my Sista Beehive life here in zion. I am very active in my community, I would consider myself a fighter for those who can't or don't know how to fight for themselves. I am one who speaks up, and these days when I speak up it's rarely for me or my children; Usually it's for someone else, someone who feels bullied in some way by  the system, or powers that be. I have even been invited to battles, and joined in only to find myself at the front of the line taking the blows until ultimately I am left alone in a fight I had not planned to participate in except  a friend tearfully asked for me to shoulder a burden, and I obliged.

I don't know what a Mormon Feminist is, friends who claim to be have tried to describe the group to me but their description of themselves aren't even the same. So, I still don't really know not 100% what a Mormon Feminist is. For example, I know that I'm a woman, I know that I'm a Mormon, and I know that I'm African American/Black (both terms acceptable to me). I don't know that I am a Mormon Feminist, you understand what I'm saying? Although I've been told several times that I am, (of course I'm scratching my head on this one). As I read comments and had my own discussions it was clear that Mormon Feminist Women should stand together and they wanted all Mormon Women to stand with them they were asking for an act of solidarity. One of my running buddies asked "don't you want equality in the church? Don't you want to feel like you have a voice"? Now, clearly she is a running friend only and we don't attend church together because she would ask me completely different questions. She said "You can get all dressy any time, this Sunday is for Sista's, it's to say I'm here if you need me, I have your back, I got'cha, you know? Letting them know you will stand with them, that's all it's  about."    REAL TALK:  I can't do all that in a dress? Where were these Sista's from? I know what the start of a fight looks like when I see one, and this is the start of a fight. Where I'm from it's better to fight in a pretty dress then to get bet up in one!

After contemplating the pants issue I decided to dress up for Jesus. Dressing up for church was what I was taught to do, so I skipped wearing the original boring semi-formal dress that I was going to wear for something with a little more pop. The way that we dress in our church has been an adjustment for me as well, while it's not my desire to wear pants I like dressing up a little more then we do in our faith (especially in Utah) the women tend to dress a bit more casual then what I was exposed to in my youth. Which isn't completely bad, it's just different and I had to learn to adjust to things here and to this culture. However there are times when I have a desire to DRESS and when the mood hits I break out my "Holiness" outfits. They call attention to themselves, people at church always want to know why I'm so dressed up and I tell them "I dressed up for you and Jesus", they smile, I smile, all is well in zion.

I decided that I wasn't going to dress down, but as an act of solidarity I was going to dress up. I wore a sparkly black tea length dress (black for the tragedy that happened in Connecticut), a red belt and red pumps for the season (although Sista Laurel would claim it was for the UofU), a few purple braids & purple eye shadow (you can't tell in the photo) purple for women suffrage: And all my fabulous accessories. In my wonderful outfit, I was prepared to stand next to any Sista that stood in need of a friend. In my red pumps I was ready to stand strong and call out anybody who had a negative thing to say to my Sista who came in her best slacks to worship with us at OUR Fathers House. In the best black dress I could find in my closet Sunday I was prepared. I was unsure and I was afraid, but I was willing to stand with ALL those who stood in need of a Sista and I knew that at the end of whatever fight (should one jump off) there were going to be other RIGHTEOUS Brotha's and Sistas standing with me and my sista(s) who decided to venture into the house of the Lord hoping to glorify His name, in the clothing of their choice, in a space that was comfortable for ALL of God's children.

** The good news is we were able to have a conversation with some of our Feminist Mormon Sista's it was eye opening. We got more information about the Pants To Church Event. What we discovered is there is a place and space for everyone, we just have to be willing to come to the table to have the conversation. The conversation was started it isn't finished yet so we will just leave it at to be continued...
The Conversation can be heard here on SiZ Radio: Mormon Women Talk About Wearing Pants To Church

Mormon Tattoos

Mormon tattoos? Given the LDS church's counsel against tattooing, you might assume that they don't exist, but au contraire. Here's some Mormon themed ink from around the web:

This is a tattoo of President Gordon B. Hinckley, 15th President of the LDS church. Who actually spoke about not getting tattoos on more than one occasion. Maybe this person needed constant reminder of President Hinckley's words.

This gentleman held an Ebay auction for prime real estate...on his face. He brought in $15,000.00 for this tattoo of Mormon presidential candidate Mitt Romney's logo. We're not clear on if he paid tithing on any of the proceeds.

Honor code unapproved, but BYU school spirit nonetheless.

Got a Mormon seminary test on Latter-day prophets? This might help.

We bet this person's favorite hymn might be, "I Love to See the Temple."

CTR means Choose The Right...as in choose the right tattoo?

Is this the place for Brigham Young Tattoos?

Clearly proud to be a Latter-day Saint.

So what does a Mormon with tattoos have to say? On SiZ Radio, we recently interviewed Al Fox, who joined the LDS church three years ago and sports some pre-baptism-ink. Her advice to folks thinking about tattoos was; "don't do it."

What do you think about ink?

Gangnam Style Done Mormon Daddy Style

Gangnam Style fever has been sweeping the world, but in case you are not one of the over 680 million people who have viewed the video you can watch it here. This should explain why you may have seen people looking like they are riding imaginary ponies in random places like the grocery store.

When something goes viral the way Psy's Gangnam Style has, you best believe there will be parodies (the Sistas at least always have our fingers crossed for it).

Check out this Gangnam Style parody; Mormon Daddy Style. This is what happens when Daddy stays home with the kids y'all, they end up on YouTube.

The Mormon Moment: It's a Wrap!

Someone asked us; What are Mormons going to do now that the "Mormon Moment" is over? We're not quite sure what those who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints actually thought the Mormon Moment was.  To us the Mormon Moment was a catchy way of saying that Mormon topics were trending, and trend they did; on Google, Yahoo, the news, media, press, online, at work, at home and at play.

Other than experiencing along with the rest of the world our LDS faith being thrust into the lime-light, we don't really think it changed much of the day-to-day aspects of life for most Mormons. The Mormon Moment wasn't a job was it, cause if so, we are owed some back wages!

Now that the presidential election is over and Governor Romney has said his gracious farewell, the press is letting everyone know that the Mormon Moment is over. So what will the Mormons do?

If you're Governor Romney or the Mormons who voted for him, some of us will be sad at first, but not for long. Mormons are a people filled with faith and hope. Y'all we have survived an extermination order, a pioneer trek to the desert and like Brotha Romney said in his gratitude-filled concession speech, we know how to pray. P. Diddy said: "Can't nobody take my pride, can't nobody hold me down, oh no, I got to keep on movin'!" And that's how the Mormons roll!

We will make Jell-o and some of us will put carrots in it. Don't judge us, we were doing it before the Mormon Moment, during the Mormon Moment and we sho ain't stoppin' now.

We will still come knocking at you're door. And now that young men can serve missions at 18 instead of 19 and young women at 19 instead of 21, there will be plenty more of us to do the Lord's work. So be nice and don't slam the door in our face, and maybe offer to feed us.

We will drive minivans. As long as they are making them, you will see Mormons driving them. Ain't no shame in our game.

We are still going to argue over whether it's ok to drink caffeine. We thought that the LDS church's statement would have stopped the debates, but umm...no.

We will  get married...to only ONE woman. (We hope the Mormon Moment has at least cleared this up.)

We will do our best to maintain our values and standards.

We will worship.

We will serve.

What we are saying is that Mormons are just gonna do what we do, we're gonna do us. Mormons may have had a moment, but we weren't Mormons for a moment. So don't worry world, our moment in the spotlight has not gone to our heads. We're still who we always were, your brothas and sistas, neighbors and friends, who just like you; are trying to be like Jesus.

Mormon Street Smarts

Do Mormons have street smarts?  Andrew Hales has a YouTube channel that is pretty much a shrine to awkwardness. (Side note from Sista Beehive: He basically acts like Sista Laurel does in real life!) He did a recent video at BYU and we gotta say; some Mormons are real nice when folks are snatchin' their stuff! These must be the Mormons that are saved, sanctified and Holy Ghost filled. We Sistas are going to try to be more like them and Jesus, but first,  since we "need" the new iPhone 5, we bout to head to Brigham Young University, "borrow" some thangs and repent later. ;-)

On the real, we are SOOOO happy we were not on campus that day, it would have been so embarrassing when y'all had to bail us out of jail, just to find out it was all a social experiment.

Check out the video and tell us what you would have done?

Sista Beehive on Black Mormons on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

When I got the call that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart wanted to talk to black Mormons about our assumed voting dilemma the first thing I said was, "how did you get my number?" Cause where I come from you guard your phone number as much as you do your social security number.

After I found out who I needed to call and cuss out  talk to about sharing my digits I said, "I'll think about it and let you know." That was three months ago and obviously I eventually said yes.

Here's what I want y'all to know; we filmed for THREE, I repeat THREE hours. And I think that Jon Stewart might have something against Mormons cause craft services (that's what the call the people who feed you in showbiz) was no where to be found and we were HUNGRY. Jimmy Kimmel doesn't believe that black Mormons exist and Jon Stewart is trying to starve to death the ones who do. That's probably why the black republican guy was so angry.

And what they call argumentative and intolerant we call famine without a fast. When they locked a group of black people in a room for three hours without feeding them, what did they think would happen? They lucky we didn't start Hunger Games up in there. I'm sayin' not a drop of green jello was to be found. Well when we die I hope that Jon Stewart knows to get the funeral potatoes ready.

At the end of the day the Sistas would consider going on The Daily Show again, but we are going to have to send him a rider with our list of demands cause Sistas gotta eat. And keep this on the DL, but Jon Stewart might moonlight as a Mormon Bishop cause none of us got paid to be on the show, y'all I think Jon Stewart tried to give me a calling!

Ps: All of us in the video actually know each other and are good friends, not that we're saying all black Mormons know each other...cause that would sound crazy...

Prophet Gives Provo Two Chances at Jabari Parker

In this past Saturday's morning session of LDS General Conference President Monson announced that LDS young men can know begin serving missions at age 18 instead of 19 and young women at age 19 instead of 21.

While it has wonderful impact for both males and females who have a desire to serve missions, we Sistas are excited about the particular impact it has for young women.

Gone are the days where female missionaries were thought of as the unfortunate ladies who weren't blessed enough to be married by age 21.

I'm turning in my mission papers will become the new Dear John letter and now the Elders will be waiting for their Sister to come home, yep boys, y'all aint the only ones worth waiting for!

On the real, we think that the lowered mission ages are fantastic and look forward to the changes it brings to the way girls will be counseled about serving missions in the LDS Young Women program.

An inadvertent side effect of the missionary age changes are the options for LDS college athletes. Males can now serve missions straight out of high school and be back in the game at age 20. One must wonder if this option has crossed Mormon high school b-baller, Jabari Parker's mind?

PS: We are saying many prayers for the MTC trainers who will now be plauged blessed by working with 18 year old boys.

Jimmy Kimmel Doesn't Believe There are Black Mormons

We Sistas were catching up with our brotha from anotha motha, Alex Boye a few weeks ago and he told us he was on Jimmy Kimmel Live and he didn't even know it! That's how famous this brotha is, he gets national TV appearances and can't even keep track of them.

Y'all know we had to find the video. In an interview with Trey Parker and Matt Stone the creators of "The Book of Mormon" musical, Jimmy Kimmel shows Alex Boye's mug and asks, "Are there black Mormons? I find that hard to believe." We don't know why he thinks the dudes from South Park would know the answer to his question, but if you really want to know Mr. Kimmel, the Sistas and Brotha Boye would be happy to come on your show and set the record straight. We'll have our people call your people, we just need your number Jimmy boo!
