Mormon Street Smarts

Do Mormons have street smarts?  Andrew Hales has a YouTube channel that is pretty much a shrine to awkwardness. (Side note from Sista Beehive: He basically acts like Sista Laurel does in real life!) He did a recent video at BYU and we gotta say; some Mormons are real nice when folks are snatchin' their stuff! These must be the Mormons that are saved, sanctified and Holy Ghost filled. We Sistas are going to try to be more like them and Jesus, but first,  since we "need" the new iPhone 5, we bout to head to Brigham Young University, "borrow" some thangs and repent later. ;-)

On the real, we are SOOOO happy we were not on campus that day, it would have been so embarrassing when y'all had to bail us out of jail, just to find out it was all a social experiment.

Kristina Southam has a passion for improving the world around her. She served as Student Body President at BYU Idaho and earned a BA in Latin American Studies at BYU Provo. While studying abroad in Mexico & Guatemala, Kristina worked alongside the Tarahumara, a tribe known for running from the book, Born to Run. A year later, she signed up for her first marathon and just completed her second. She is an executive of the Saints and Sinners Half Marathon to help missionaries afford to serve, lives in DC and works for USAID doing international disaster relief.

Donte' Holland whose rap name is Beloved the Ghostwriter is a Gospel rap artist and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sista Beehive on Black Mormons on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

When I got the call that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart wanted to talk to black Mormons about our assumed voting dilemma the first thing I said was, "how did you get my number?" Cause where I come from you guard your phone number as much as you do your social security number.

After I found out who I needed to call and cuss out  talk to about sharing my digits I said, "I'll think about it and let you know." That was three months ago and obviously I eventually said yes.

Here's what I want y'all to know; we filmed for THREE, I repeat THREE hours. And I think that Jon Stewart might have something against Mormons cause craft services (that's what the call the people who feed you in showbiz) was no where to be found and we were HUNGRY. Jimmy Kimmel doesn't believe that black Mormons exist and Jon Stewart is trying to starve to death the ones who do. That's probably why the black republican guy was so angry.

And what they call argumentative and intolerant we call famine without a fast. When they locked a group of black people in a room for three hours without feeding them, what did they think would happen? They lucky we didn't start Hunger Games up in there. I'm sayin' not a drop of green jello was to be found. Well when we die I hope that Jon Stewart knows to get the funeral potatoes ready.

At the end of the day the Sistas would consider going on The Daily Show again, but we are going to have to send him a rider with our list of demands cause Sistas gotta eat. And keep this on the DL, but Jon Stewart might moonlight as a Mormon Bishop cause none of us got paid to be on the show, y'all I think Jon Stewart tried to give me a calling!

Ps: All of us in the video actually know each other and are good friends, not that we're saying all black Mormons know each other...cause that would sound crazy...

Prophet Gives Provo Two Chances at Jabari Parker

In this past Saturday's morning session of LDS General Conference President Monson announced that LDS young men can know begin serving missions at age 18 instead of 19 and young women at age 19 instead of 21.

While it has wonderful impact for both males and females who have a desire to serve missions, we Sistas are excited about the particular impact it has for young women.

Gone are the days where female missionaries were thought of as the unfortunate ladies who weren't blessed enough to be married by age 21.

I'm turning in my mission papers will become the new Dear John letter and now the Elders will be waiting for their Sister to come home, yep boys, y'all aint the only ones worth waiting for!

On the real, we think that the lowered mission ages are fantastic and look forward to the changes it brings to the way girls will be counseled about serving missions in the LDS Young Women program.

An inadvertent side effect of the missionary age changes are the options for LDS college athletes. Males can now serve missions straight out of high school and be back in the game at age 20. One must wonder if this option has crossed Mormon high school b-baller, Jabari Parker's mind?

PS: We are saying many prayers for the MTC trainers who will now be plauged blessed by working with 18 year old boys.

Jimmy Kimmel Doesn't Believe There are Black Mormons

We Sistas were catching up with our brotha from anotha motha, Alex Boye a few weeks ago and he told us he was on Jimmy Kimmel Live and he didn't even know it! That's how famous this brotha is, he gets national TV appearances and can't even keep track of them.

Y'all know we had to find the video. In an interview with Trey Parker and Matt Stone the creators of "The Book of Mormon" musical, Jimmy Kimmel shows Alex Boye's mug and asks, "Are there black Mormons? I find that hard to believe." We don't know why he thinks the dudes from South Park would know the answer to his question, but if you really want to know Mr. Kimmel, the Sistas and Brotha Boye would be happy to come on your show and set the record straight. We'll have our people call your people, we just need your number Jimmy boo!

30 Days of WoW (Word of Wisdom)

A few months ago we were talking about the Word of Wisdom and what might be the effects or blessings of really studying it and challenging ourselves to focus on it for 30 days. That was in May, it took us until October to summon up the courage and now we're on day 3. The best part of our experience so far has been the conversations created. We're having so much fun talking to our friends both of our faith and other faiths about the WoW.

Snagged some fresh strawberries from the farmer's market.

The Word of Wisdom is found in Section 89 of the Doctrine & Covenants (a volume of LDS scripture). "The Word of Wisdom is a law of health revealed by the Lord for the physical and spiritual benefit of His children. (LDS.org)" You can read the WoW in it's entirety here.

At the suggestion of many of you we are putting extra emphasis on the DOs of the WoW while still maintaining the don'ts. It's been trial and error for us and like we said we are only on day 3. We've found that it takes some preparation and it's been helpful to read the WoW each day.

Some of the tenants of the WoW are things that are already in practice in our lives, we don't drink alcohol or use tobacco. However there are aspects like eating meat sparingly and eating fruits and vegetables of the season that we are learning more about. We decided to refrain from eating meat for 30 days. It's a little easier for Sista Laurel as she only eats seafood meats,  Sista Beehive could use some prayer, but it's been exciting for both of us as we try new recipes and have fun with fruits and veggies.

We aren't saying that the WoW prohibits meat, we're just taking the opportunity to focus a little more on verses 12 & 13:

12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;
13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.

Anyway y'all, so far so good. We'll keep you posted. And please keep sending tips and recipes they have been helpful!
