Scott Howell was born in Provo, Utah and raised in Salt Lake City. He graduated from the University of Utah and spent 34 years with IBM. Beginning in 1990 he served three terms in the Utah State Senate. Now Scott is running for U.S. Senate against current U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch. Howell will be talking to the Sistas about his campaign and being a Mormon Democrat. Scott and his wife Linda are the parents of four sons and have four daughters-in-law, three granddaughters and one grandson. Learn more about Scott on his website.

Mark Pope grew up in Washington where he was a star high school basketball player. He attended the University of Kentucky where he helped the Wildcats win a National Championship. Pope played in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets. After his NBA career he attended two years of medical school before getting back into basketball as an assistant coach. He is now an assistant coach at BYU. He and his wife Lee Anne have four daughters and are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

No YOLO: Drake Got It Wrong!

Y'all know we take every member a missionary real serious like, so we're bout give a Sistas in Zion sermon. The other day in church, y'all know what church is right? The house of the Lord, where we praise God and learn about JESUS. Ok so at church we heard this girl telling her friend about her weekend then she said,"YOLO!"

Now it's not like we've never heard YOLO before. Anybody with a Facebook has probably seen pictures of friends doing stupid things and then their status says stuff like, "Gotz ma new 4head tat...YOLO! lolololol." Ever since rapper Drake said "You Only Live Once" in his song "The Motto" people have been ridin' YOLO til' the wheels fall off.

What is a shock is to hear people saying YOLO at Christian churches. Y'all remember that guy, wait for it, it will come to you, oh yeah, JESUS! Lets see if we can explain this:

There was a woman named Mary who had a baby in a manger. That baby's name was JESUS.

JESUS was crucified and died for your sins, our sins, yo mama's sins, everybody's sins.

Three days after he died Jesus rose again, he was resurrected, he LIVED again. They went to the tomb and it was empty! He was walking around, he said hi to his friends, he showed people the nail prints in hands. They wrote a song about it called He Is Risen! and that song came out waaaaayyy before Drake's.

So the moral of this sermon is:

Don't do stupid stuff and then say, "Oh wellz u only live 1nce, YOLO!...lololol...ROTFL." Live life with eternal perspective.

PS: Drake we ain't mad atcha, you could still invite us to the Grammys!

Rulan and Mary Snow had their first date when Mary was a Sophomore and Rulan was a Jr. at Provo High School He graduated and spent 6 months active duty army reserve while Mary completed High School. He came home December 11, 1961, he and Mary officially got engaged February 14, 1962 and they got married September 14, 1962. He liked it so he put a ring on it! Renee Miller graduated from BYU and went on to earn a  law degree from Southwestern Law School. It's hard to sneak anything past this Sista. Not only is she our Legal Department, (y''all heard that, we got a legal department so don't make us act up) but, if you could get a Youtube Phd, she'd be Dr. Miller already! This Savvy sista isn't here to advise us on the law today, she'll be joining us from time to time as an SiZ correspondent, keeping us up on on game cause when it comes to the Mormon community she keeps her ear to the ground and her eyes on the prize. Renee keeps it fresh and real, sometimes too real even for us. Hold on to ya seats as she breaks down what's happening in this Mormon moment.

Do you read the Twible?

The following aren't to replace daily scripture study, but are resources for when you need a quick dose of scripture or are dealing with teenagers (who have shorter attention spans than toddlers).

Bible in a Minute (The name says it all.)

We're a wee bit of twitter fanatics. We live tweet General Conference every year and help the LDS church out by doing the "urban" translations for them (it's an unofficial calling). So of course we love the Twible (pronounced like Bible).

Jana Riess, tweets a Bible chapter a day and adds a little humor all in 140 characters or less. An extra bonus of the Twible is that it's a good jump off for bible discussion among the teen populous. Check it out here.

So there you have it, there is no reason not to get your scripture reading on even on busy days! Got any tips for more effective scripture study, making it happen daily or getting kids excited about it?

Is Nicki Minaj Voting for a Mormon?

A few days ago rapper Nicki Minaj's lyrics sparked chatter that she was endorsing Mormon presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Minaj spit; "I'm a Republican voting for Mitt Romeny..." she then goes on to say that lazy people are messing up the economy. (We're paraphrasing the second part cause we gave up cussing in public this past Lent.)

When questioned about Nicki's endorsement of Brotha Romeny, President Obama said, “I think she had a song on there — a little rap that said that, but she likes to play different characters, so I don’t know what’s going on there.”

Nicki Minaj is known for having multiple alter egos, they have their own names and everything y'all. If you or the Sistas had a few extra personalities they would test us for schizophrenia, but in Hollywood it's just fine to have "personas" who talk to you and have their own personalities and voices.

Even the President is on a first name basis with some of Nicki's personalities. He went on to say, “That was probably Roman who did it.” Roman Zolanski is a popular male persona of Nicki's. N-E-way it seems like the Prez might have been right since Nicki tweeted this:


We're still telling ourselves that Her Minajesty might have a sweet spot for us Morms though. In addition to mentioning Brotha Mitt, the song is featured on the album of Lil Wayne' who mentioned Jimmer Fredette in one of his raps.

Hey Nicki, call us if  one of your personalties is interested in the LDS faith. We can send the missionaries over and we volunteer to be your visiting teachers. Us Mormons have been in the rap game for a long time, but we could always use new talent. Alex Boye does all the rapping for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but maybe you could do a remake of the Mormon Rap!

Caffeine Cool for Mormons

Did you hear? Diet Coke is now the official drink of the Mormons! Just playin' ya'll that ain't true, but in an effort to clear up some of the errors on Rock Center's "Mormons in America," a recent television special that aired on NBC, the LDS Newsroom posted Mormonism in the News: Getting It Right and said this about caffeine:

Despite what was reported, the Church revelation spelling out health practices (Doctrine and Covenants 89) does not mention the use of caffeine. The Church’s health guidelines prohibit alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and “hot drinks” — taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee. 

We Sistas decided a few months ago that we would embark on "30 Days of WoW", a self imposed challenge to follow the Word of Wisdom verbatim and chronicle the effects, both spiritual and temporal. We're starting on October 1st. Following the Word of Wisdom word for word is not as simple as it sounds, some aspects of the WoW seem vague, open to interpretation or have been taught, but aren't necessarily written and caffeine consumption is one of those. Over the years we've heard many things regarding LDS health guidelines and the Word of Wisdom such as:

• The caffeine in coffee and tea is the reason why Mormons don't consume these drinks.
• BYU doesn't serve caffeine and there must be a greater spiritual reason for that.
• Caffeine is an addictive substance so it should not be consumed.
• Caffeine is not against the Word of Wisdom, but we are counseled not to use it.
• No "hot drinks:" tea and coffee are out but herbal teas are fine.
• Eat meat sparingly: it's ok to ignore this one.
• No alcohol: alcohol free beers like O'Dules are ok, they have less alcohol than NyQuil.
• Herbs are good: smoke a joint.

The list goes on and on. Now, before you go declaring that Mormons are weirdos let's not get it twisted, there are many religions that have dietary and health guidelines; Judiasm, Catholosim, Islam, Seventh Day Adventism and Buddhism to name a few. No matter what our faith it's always good to study the tenets, gain greater testimonies of them and utilize the brains that the good Lord gave us. So that's what we'll be hoping for as we start our 30 Days of WoW. We'll be posting soon about what we'll be restricting and why and also what we will be trying to consume more of.
