We come from families where you "say grace" even if you're at a public restaurant. Sometimes it ain't no thing but a chicken wing and other times it's slightly awkward and depending on your age a little embarrassing. Maybe this could be an option:
Even if it was available at restaurants we don't think our family would indulge in pre-blessed food. (1) They're picky about who "prays on" them or their food and (2) We got that family that likes to hear the sound of their own voice, blessing the food can sometimes turn into a mini sermon.
Do you bless your food at restaurants? Do you do so out loud or silently? Kids, is it embarrassing to pray for food out loud in public?

We pre-bless the food, LOL.
ReplyDeleteWe pre-blessed in the car or at home. :) But I could do so much with PRE BLESSED or especially Double PRE Blessed food! HILARIOUS!
ReplyDeleteIt depends. If it's a noisy restaurant and I have my kids with me, I say a silent prayer to bless the food and to ask for an uneventful, spill free, the three year old made it to the bathroom in time experience.
ReplyDeleteBut if say, we are eating at Steak n Shake with the missionaries 'cause SOMEBODY burned the dinner or SOMEBODY forgot to tell me that they signed us up to feed the missionaries.... Then we pray outloud.
The member families in my mission in Brazil were so generous to feed us missionaries all the time. I can seriously count on my hands the number of times we did not have a lunch appointment (lunch is the bigger meal there). I remember arriving late once to lunch (hmmm... more like late once a day), and the family had already started eating (we were really late, and the kids had to get back to school). When we sat down, they told us, "Oh, sisters, you don't need to pray--it's already been blessed."

In seminary this year my friends and I are Mormon but don't go to the same high schools made a pact to pray for our food at school for lunch. I did it in my mind but people still saw me doing it and at first it was kind of awkward but then my school friends got used to it. So then some of my friends started asking me to pray out loud for their food too and after that some of my other friends would take turns saying the prayer too and they are not Mormons. One time my friend got food poisoning and my other guy friend said you should of have had Joecee pray for your food thats why none of us got it. It was pretty funy!

ReplyDeleteWe are constantly saying those silent prayers girl! It's true when you take the missionaries to dinner it seems to dinner it seems like you automatically remember to pray for the food at a restaurant.
ReplyDeleteHa ha...and here we were thinking that the US had the monopoly on the pre-blessed food. The prayers probably sound really pretty in Portuguese too!

ReplyDeleteI usually bless food at a restaurant - silently. It probably is obvious if anyone is looking right at me front in front, but nobody would know otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the pre-blessed food idea, but, since I don't believe blessings do anything directly to the food (or we ice cream and sugar consuming Mormons all would be skinny) . . .

Not only do we bless our food in public - we use it as a witnessing tool. I always a) tell the wait person that when the food comes my husband or I are going to bless it and b) would YOU like us to offer a prayer for you? I have gotten the "full range" of answers; but to MOST people, it is viewed as blessing that we aked.

ReplyDeleteWe've never thought of asking the waiter if they are in need of prayer. That is kind, do they take you up on the offer sometimes?
ReplyDeleteMy family (they're non-members) grew up praying out loud...and holding hands. Always awkward when the waitress isn't paying attention when she comes back to the table to ask, "Is there anything else you need?"
